Weightbound
a coffee table
constructed with a mortise and tenon joint
Weightbound is made out of two loose pieces of reinforce concrete that slide into eachother
with a common wood joint connection called a Mortise and tenon joint.
The table may seem unstable, as if it could topple over at any moment. However, through careful design and an understanding of weight distribution, it remains remarkably strong and steady, defying expectations and challenging the viewer’s perception of balance and stability.
Traditionaly you have to polish concrete to achive a shiny texture.
But if PAUW studio would polish this concrete he would take away critical mass from the table resulting in a bad connection.
To achieve this polished look he developed a special technique of making moulds that gives the impression of polished concrete without extualy polishing
